25 May 01Mission: Hextreme
Are you up for a real challenge? Hextreme is a brand new six event race for individual competitors. The race, which comprises rowing, sailing, windsurfing, swimming, cycling and running, takes place at Poole, Dorset on Sunday 2 September 2001.
This unique challenge will begin with three separate, timed races: a 1,000m row across Poole Park Lake; a dinghy sailing race course; and a windsurfing race course – both taking place in Poole Harbour. The sea swim (500m), cycle (15km) and run (5km) will be raced as a triathlon, and the competitors will have a staggered start based on their rankings in the earlier events. The triathlon will start and finish on Sandbanks Beach.
Katie Havicon, organiser of Hextreme at the Borough of Poole, said: "We have tremendous support from local sports organisations and we’re all really excited about the future potential of the race. The inaugural Hextreme event will be limited to 30 competitors in the first year, but we will grow from this in future years and have a vision for it to become a major national and international event in years to come."
The event will take place across Poole’s prestigious and award winning parks and beaches, and on the idyllic waters of Poole Harbour. Those watching the race will also be able to enjoy entertainment and stalls at various places around the course. Hextreme promises to be an exciting day out for both competitors and spectators of all ages.
Local sports organisations supporting the event are: Bournemouth University and Bournemouth University Alumni Rowing Club; Rockley Watersports; French Connection Watersports; Poole Lifeguards; Poole Wheelers; and Poole Runners. There will be competitor registration and a course familiarisation day on Saturday 1 September 2001.
