15 May 01NEW MAYOR AND SHERIFF FOR POOLE
Cllr Ron Parker has been elected as the Mayor of Poole for 2001-02, at the Mayor Making ceremony held today. Cllr Graham Mason was elected Sheriff and Cllr Mrs Joyce Jones, Mayor of Poole for 2000-01, was appointed Deputy Mayor.Cllr Ron Parker is the 753rd Mayor of Poole. Ron has chosen Poole Hospital Asthma Fund and the Julia Perks Foundation charities for his mayoral year:
The Poole Hospital Asthma Fund provides respiratory medical equipment for patients with asthma and breathing difficulties. Cllr Ron Parker, said: "Breathing is so easily taken for granted but for some people it presents serious difficulties for carrying out the normal daily activities and requires special equipment not always provided by the Health Service." The Julia Perks Foundation is raising money to provide a hospice to care for terminally ill children.
The new Mayor of Poole has also announced his youth escort, boy scout, David Trent.
Two chaplains have been appointed by the Mayor, Reverend Jeremy Oakes of the Transfiguration Church and Canon Father Peter Webb of St Mary's Church.
Mayor of Poole, Cllr Ron Parker, said: "During Poole's long and distinguished history there have been periods of great opportunity and change. Today, we are facing the challenge of another period of great opportunity for our town, the most challenging project is the long awaited Poole Harbour Crossing. Jean and I eagerly look forward to the forthcoming year with the many challenges and civic opportunities ahead."
Cllr Graham Mason, Sheriff of Poole, who will be supporting the Mayor in Civic duties and responsibilities, said: "This is a proud moment for me and I look forward to giving my support to our new Mayor and his lovely wife Jean in promoting Poole. It's a very important time in our history. Let's look to a brighter future, make Poole an even better place, a safer place for our children to be educated, a place for full employment, a place to grow old without fear."
Cllr Mrs Joyce Jones in her outgoing Mayoral speech, said: "This has been an exciting year to be Mayor, a year that I shall never forget. To be Mayor in 2000-2001 has been a memorable experience. I would like to thank the people of Poole who have received me so warmly, who have gone out of their way to make me feel so welcome and who have made this such a happy and special year. I know that they will extend the same welcome to our new Mayor and Mayoress. I hope that they enjoy their year in office as much as Ken and I have."
