POOLE PARENTS HAVE A VOICE

Parents in Poole are being given the opportunity to have their say through the Parents Voice - Valued Opinions in Children’s Education.

Meeting twice a term, two parents from each school can represent their school as members and represent the views and perspectives of parents in Poole concerning local and national educational issues. The representatives then relay back information to parents in the school.

First established in 1997, the Poole Parents Forum is designed to improve communication between Poole parents and policy makers. The Forum tackles a variety of important issues, including secondary school admissions, education funding and drugs awareness. Parents Voice also gives the opportunity for Council Officers to consult parents on national issues that may affect Poole children, such as improved funding. Representatives from Parents Voice are also members of council working parties, making decisions on issues such as special educational needs and improving information for parents.

Susannah Kipling, Chair of the Parents Forum, said: "It is important that parents get their views across and the Parents Voice is an excellent way to do so. Research shows that parental involvement with their children’s education raises standards."

Paul Taylor, Head of Pupil and Parent Support Services, said: "I am delighted that Parents Voice has been re-launched because it plays an essential link in communicating with parents about school issues. As well as finding out parents views on local issues, Parents Voice gives the Borough of Poole the opportunity to inform parents on national issues affecting Poole. By working together we are continuously improving our services to help both Poole parents and their children."

Notes:

The next meeting of the Parents Forum is on Wednesday 16 May 2001 at the Civic Centre. Meetings of the Parents Forum are not open to the public.

Anyone interested in becoming a representative should contact the head teacher of their child’s school for further information.
