TIME RUNNING OUT FOR JULES JOLLIFFE!

Time is running out for Poole people to have their say about how the Council will be run in the future.

As part of the Borough of Poole’s imaginative Jules Jolliffe campaign, residents have only a few days left to return their freepost voting card and register their view on which of the 3 Government options will be the best way for the Council to run and provide local services in the future.

Voting is due to close on 27 April and under Poole’s eye-catching campaign, ‘Jules Jolliffe’ could be one of three people:
· Directly elected Mayor and Cabinet
· Leader with Cabinet
· Directly elected Mayor and Council Manager

Cllr Graham Wilson, Executive Spokesperson for Community Information said: "Jules Jolliffe has really worked and helped to raise local people’s awareness about the choices facing Poole. We have had a fantastic response so far and it looks as if Poole will have one of the highest responses in the country. However time is running out and it is important that everyone who wants to have their say returns their voting card as soon as possible."

The three options for change are:

· Directly elected Mayor and Cabinet: Poole residents vote for a person (the Mayor) to be in charge of the way the Council is run. The Mayor then chooses a small group of people (a Cabinet) from among the Councillors, to help him or her lead the Council. Councillors continue to be elected by residents as they are now.
· Leader with Cabinet: The elected Councillors choose a Leader, from among themselves, who will be in charge of the way the Council is run. Either the Leader or the Councillors then choose a small group of councillors (a Cabinet), to help lead the Council. Poole residents continue to vote for local Councillors as they do now.
· Directly elected Mayor and Council Manager: Poole residents vote for a person (the Mayor) to be in charge of the way the Council is run. Councillors and the Mayor recruit a Council Manager (i.e. a paid professional who is not elected) to share the leadership of the Council with the Mayor. Residents continue to vote for local Councillors as they do now.

When the vote closes on 27 April, residents views will be collated together with the views received from Poole businesses, other stakeholder groups and from other forms of consultation.

A special ‘judgement board’, appointed from amongst members of the local community, will consider the results on18 May. Councillors will make a final decision about which option Poole should adopt at a meeting of the Full Council on 26 June. The meeting starts at 7pm at the Civic Centre and is open to the public. The new system will be put into place no later than the end of 2002.
