HAMWORTHY’S WORST TRAFFIC FEARS ALLAYED

Fears of 16 weeks of traffic chaos in Hamworthy this summer have been allayed, following successful negotiations between the Borough of Poole and gas pipeline operator Transco.

Fears were first aroused last month, when Transco announced they must replace a gas main along the busy Blandford Road in Hamworthy. The road is a main route into Poole and also carries considerable traffic in and out of the port. Motorists were afraid that the works would coincide with the summer holiday season and the subsequent increases in traffic flow through the port.

Following discussions between themselves and the Borough of Poole, Transco have agreed that the works should not commence until after the summer holiday period. Negotiations are still ongoing regarding the method and duration of the works but both parties agree that minimising disruption to traffic is a key objective.

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment and Prosperity said: "Any roadworks affecting Blandford Road will inevitably have a significant effect on the residents and businesses in the area. We are pleased that Transco have agreed to commence these essential works after the summer holiday period."

Cllr Lou Knight, Chairperson for the Hamworthy, Harbour and Oakdale Area Committee said: "We’re now working with Transco to find ways of minimising the duration of the works and the disruption they will cause. Residents at one of our recent meetings told us that they would prefer a one-way route into Poole, rather that a stop-go two-way system. Transco are considering that option, as well as looking for ways to complete the works in a much reduced time scale."

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Following recent incidents and subsequent investigations by Transco, over 1500 metres of medium pressure gas main in Blandford Road, Hamworthy now need to be replaced before next winter. This will require the installation of a new 180 mm pipeline between Lake Road and Shapwick Road.
