GREEN AWARD FEATURED AGAIN FOR 2001
Once again, architects, developers and landscapers of new buildings and projects in Poole will have the chance to win a prestigious award recognising their design skills and use of sustainable materials.
Organisers of Poole Council’s annual Pride of Place Award for 2001 are looking for entries which will reflect the Council’s commitment to the environment. Last year, a special prize for the best example of sustainable construction was introduced to encourage the building industry to give greater consideration to environmental factors when planning new projects. This is now set to be a permanent feature of the Awards programme.
The Poole Pride of Place Award has been a regular event in Poole since 1980 and past winners have included the Custom House on The Quay, the Conning Tower flats at Canford Cliffs and last year, the new Learning and Resource Centre at the Arts Institute.
Councillor Bob Williams, Chairman of the Environmental Policy Board said: "These awards have been extremely useful in emphasising the quality of design that the Borough expects in new development".
Mary Tibbles, Secretary of Poole’s Agenda 21 Forum was pleased that last year’s winner was the Poole Energy Advice Centre, she said: "This year, Poole Agenda 21 have been doing their bit to promote sustainable construction by organising a series of seminars with the Dorset branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) "There are so many opportunities for using methods and products in building that make a positive contribution to the environment".
As last year, in making their assessment, the judges will be looking for the use of new technologies for energy and water efficiency, and for enhancements to site ecology.
Entries are judged by a panel of five including the Mayor, the Chairman of Planning and Development Sub-Committee, an architect nominated by the Local Chapter of the Royal Institute of British Architects plus two other invited judges, one of whom will be an expert in sustainable technology.
The award, which is a distinguished Poole Pottery plaque to be displayed on the building, is given to schemes that make the greatest contribution to quality and appearance either in the form of buildings or landscape.
There is no restriction on the size or type of schemes that can be considered and anyone can nominate a scheme, provided that it was completed before the 31 December 2000, or in 1999 and not previously entered for an award. The closing date for this year’s award entries will be Noon on Tuesday 8th May 2001. You can pick up a form from the Council offices or any public library in the Borough and send your nomination to Head of Planning Design and Control Services, Borough of Poole, Civic Centre, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2RU.
If you know of a new building or improvement or a piece of landscaping, or a new project that has used sustainable technology, then either contact the architect or developer or make your own nomination.
If you need any advice you can contact John Biggs, the Conservation Officer at Poole on 01202 633331.
