10 Apr 01WINNING BID FOR REFUGE
Victims of domestic violence will soon have a safe refuge in Poole. Following a successful bid for Government funding, plans are to go ahead for a refuge development of 12 self-contained flats with communal rooms, as well as 6 satellite flats to cater for those wanting more independent accommodation.
Cllr Jane James, Executive Spokesperson for Care, said "I am so relieved that we are getting this funding because the refuge is badly needed. Domestic violence is an horrendous thing. It’s terrible for the people going through it."
The refuge is estimated to cost somewhere in the region of £1.5 million to build and will be funded half by the Borough of Poole and half by the Government’s Safer Communities Supported Housing Fund. Partners in the scheme, Bournemouth Churches and Signpost housing associations, will be responsible for the development and management of the refuge and the provision of associated support services.
Peter Kegg, Chief Executive of Bournemouth Churches Housing Association, said: "We know that our refuge in Bournemouth is massively oversubscribed and are delighted to be working with the Borough of Poole to provide a second refuge within the conurbation. We will aim for both refuges to work together for the benefit of the whole area."
The need for a safe house for domestic violence victims and their families was highlighted last year, after the Council commissioned the specialist Research and Advice Project (Domestic Violence). The project aims to provide both ongoing support and advice to victims, as well research into the range of support and services they need.
Anny Gilchrist, RAPdv Project Leader, said: "We are delighted that the existing service we provide will continue and actually be enhanced by this new provision in Poole."
