4 Apr 01THE CENSUS IS COMING!
On the 29th April 2001 every person who is usually resident in this country will take part in the Census. This is undertaken every ten years by the Office for National Statistics (www.statistics.gov.uk) providing a snapshot of the entire population across the whole country. Every effort is made to include everyone, so it is the most complete source of information about the population available. It is used to distribute large amounts of Central Government funds (about £45 billion annually) to local authorities and health authorities and allows health, education, transport, and housing needs to be planned for the years ahead. Funding from Central Government constitutes approximately two thirds of the money available to the Borough of Poole, therefore the accuracy of the Census data is extremely important.
The information collected is used only to produce statistics about the population in general. The Census form and the information it contains are protected by law and cannot be divulged to anybody for 100 years, so personal information is NOT passed on to anyone else not even other government departments.
Your 2001 Census form will be delivered with a pre-paid envelope in time for the 29th April 2001 by a Census taker or Enumerator. The form includes questions that cover age, sex, marital status, ethnic group, health status, qualifications, employment, workplace, journey to work, accommodation and the relationship of people within the household.
