Mayor of Poole - Cllr Ron ParkerRon Parker is to become the Mayor of Poole for the coming year. Married with two daughters and four grandchildren, Ron was born in Dorchester and has lived in the Poole area since 1958. During his varied career as a teacher and lecturer in Business Studies, Transport and Tourism, Ron's experience has ranged from teaching at schools in Poole and Middlesex for a short period, to a post as Senior Lecturer at Dorset Institute of Higher Education, which is now Bournemouth University. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Logistics and Transport.
Ron played a regular role in local government in Purbeck before joining Poole Council in 1988 as Ward Councillor for Bourne Valley. In 1995 he became Ward Councillor for Penn Hill. During this time he has served on a number of committees. He is currently a Member of the Court of Southampton University and is a representative on the Local Government Association and the South West Assembly of the Regional Development Agency.
A member of the National Trust since 1981, Ron is able to indulge in some of his favourite pastimes including swimming, photography and countryside walks at many of Poole's outstanding beauty spots. As well as a keen interest in the theatre and classical music, Ron is an experienced foreign traveller. As Vice-Chairman of the Poole Cherbourg Twinning Society, Ron enjoys his passion for French Culture whenever possible and with family members living in France is always assured of a warm Gallic welcome.
Sheriff - Cllr Graham Mason
Cllr Graham Mason is to become the Sheriff of Poole for the coming year. Graham and his wife Susan have three daughters, two sons and 11 grandchildren. He was born in 1941 and raised in Hall Green, Birmingham.
He first came to Poole when he joined the Royal Marines in 1960. Graham served with 42 Commando in Singapore and Malaya, on HMS URSA in the West Indies, 41 Commando in Malta, on peace-keeping operations in the Middle East and the United Nations in Cyprus. He also served with 3rd Commando Brigade and ACE Mobile forces in Northern Ireland and Europe.
On leaving the Marines the family settled in the Broadstone area, with the children attending Springdale First School, Broadstone Middle School and then
on to Corfe Hills. Graham worked for McCarthy and Stone as plant and transport manager, then White's Aggregates until they were taken over by Drinkwater Sabey.
For the past 15 years Graham has run his Health Food business in Broadstone and later in Kinson. He has been a Governor of Broadstone First School, the Chairman of Contract Services until recently and is Chairman of Age Concern, Broadstone and the Broadstone Youth Club. His main interests are his family and friends.
Deputy Mayor - Cllr Joyce Jones
Mrs Joyce Jones, who is the current Mayor, will be Deputy Mayor in the coming year.
The new Civic Office holders will be invested on 15 May 2001.
