FLAG OF SUCCESS FOR POOLE'S BEACHES

POOLE is once again celebrating seaside success after a record number of prestigious awards for its beaches.

In this year's Seaside Awards 2001, Poole's award winning beaches for 2001 are: Poole Sandbanks Beach, Poole Shore Road Beach and Poole Branksome Chine Beach.

The Seaside Awards have very strict criteria for bathing water, beach safety and supervision, good beach management and clear information for the public.

With more than three miles of golden sand, Sandbanks Beach has already been designated by the EC as an area which has achieved the highest standard of cleanliness. In the Tidy Britain Group resort survey 2000, Sandbanks beach rated amongst the top 5 beaches in the country.

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment, said: "We are delighted to have received these awards for what I think are three of the best beaches in the country. We are fortunate in Poole to have wonderful beaches but these awards also recognise the work of our Beach staff who look after them and everyone using them. The winter work to build more rock groynes will help to protect these areas for future generations and I look forward to next year's awards where I'm sure Poole's beaches will continue to fly it's flag high."

Editor's Notes

Poole has six main accesses to the beach all adjacent to each other along the southern shoreline:
· Flaghead Chine
· Canford Cliffs
· Sandbanks
· Shore Road
· Branksome Chine
· Branksome Dene Chine

The Borough of Poole is awaiting results of the Blue Flag applications for Sandbanks and Shore Road beach, which will be announced on 1 June 2001.

The stretch of beach in front of the promenade at Sandbanks is due to reopen by Easter following the completion of four rock groynes to protect Sandbanks Beach. Funded by the Government, the work will help prevent the beach from being washed away.
