Poole MYP Appoints Alastair Campbell Junior

Poole’s Member of Youth Parliament Ruth Bessant, is believed to be the first MYP in the UK to appoint a Public Relations Adviser. Seventeen-year-old Lucy Moseley was appointed Youth PR Co-ordinator after the advertisement, “Wanted - Alastair Campbell Junior”, appeared in the Council Newspaper - Poole News.

The appointment was made to coincide with Local Democracy Week and was supported personally by Alastair Campbell - former Director of Communications at 'Number 10'. The appointment will receive a bursary awarded by the Borough of Poole's own Corporate Communications office who will also help Lucy gain access to local media.

An early message of support came from Alastair Campbell - "I want to congratulate Lucy and wish her all the best in the challenge ahead. Poole has got a lot going for it and I'm sure she will do a great deal to put that over. Also, young people - the vast majority of whom are a credit to their families and schools - get a raw deal from much of the media, and I'm sure Lucy will do something to counter that too, by showing what young people in Poole have to offer the community."

Lucy’s main role will be to support Ruth Bessant and the Poole Youth Forum in making sure young people's voices are heard on key local issues. She will also have editorial freedom for a Youth Express page in the council’s newspaper - Poole News.

"I was delighted to be selected for the Youth PR Co-ordinator. I have already been associating with localmedia and I've found it a lot of fun and a great opportunity to promote the hard work that young people have been involved in around Poole. There is too much stereo-typing of young people and I hope I can help get young people's views across more effectively. Young people are the voice of the future. We do not somuch need to use 'spin' just make sure our views are listened to more than they are now," said Lucy.

The Parkstone Grammar School pupil has already had to hit the ground running by writing the publicity for the forthcoming Youth Conference on October 29 at Poole’s Civic Centre and penning several articles to be featured in the next edition of Poole News in November.

Local Democracy Week runs nationwide from October 18 to 24 but is being marked in the Borough of Poole from October 25 to 31 to coincide with Half Term week and Poole Youth Conference
