24 Jan 01BROOKING ON THE BALL AT OPENING OF ATHLETICS TRACK
BBC sports presenter, Trevor Brooking, is to officially open the new state-of-the-art athletics track at Ashdown Leisure Centre, in Canford Heath, Poole, on Friday 26th January 2001.
The day has been designed to show off the new athletics track and will feature local school children taking part in a number of sporting activities. Whilst at the Centre Trevor Brooking, the Chairman of Sport England, will be presenting a cheque from the Lottery Sports Fund for £429,000 to the Mayor. These Lottery funds have been used to build the track and purchase athletic equipment.
Funded by the Borough of Poole, Poole Sports Council and National Lottery, the new £567,500 floodlit all-weather track includes a number of new facilities, catering for events such as long jump, discus, pole vault and javelin.
The Ashdown Leisure Centre and athletics track is available to both the local school and the community, allowing athletes in Poole to enjoy first class facilities regardless of whether they are beginners or at competition standard.
Andrew Dayus, Principal Recreation Officer for the Borough of Poole, said: "The opening of this track provides a much needed facility for the athletic clubs in Poole and the surrounding area, and fills in a gap in the Borough of Poole’s sports provision. Maybe one day a Track and Field Olympic Champion will come from Poole! The opportunity to have Trevor Brooking, one of this country’s most revered footballers, in his capacity as Chairman of Sport England, open the track and raise awareness of the facility within the community, was an opportunity not to be missed!"
