DORSET BUSINESSES GO BATI!

South Dorset businesses will begin to tackle congestion at a seminar on Thursday 8th February at Bournemouth International Airport.

One of a series of seminars organised by Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry looking at transport across the county, the meeting aims to set up a Business and Transport Initiative group (BATI), to look at traffic issues affecting local companies

The seminar will challenge local businesses to set up Travel Plans, with speakers from firms such as Marconi communications and Poole Hospital giving presentations on work they have undertaken in this field.

Chris Francombe, Transportation Policy Manager, Borough of Poole: "The Government is encouraging everyone to change their travel behaviour either by reducing the amount we travel and introducing more environmentally-friendly transport. Because the majority of travel we undertake is work related, companies need to be aware of all the new measures which affect them such as workplace parking charges, changes in company car taxation and general vehicle taxation to favour fuel efficiency and cleaner fuels. Working with companies to help introduce Travel Plans tailored to their individual sites will help employees and promote greener, cleaner travel choices which will reduce our reliance on the car".

Travel Plans are packages of measures and targets that can enable organisations to reduce the impact of travel and transport on the environment, whilst also bringing a number of other benefits.

DCCI spokesperson, Rupert Owen, said: "For business, this can include increased productivity generated by a healthier, more motivated workforce, potential cost savings and reduced congestion. Staff can also benefit from improved health, cost and time savings, reduced stress and a general improvement in quality of life. There is a knock-on for local communities too - improved public transport services and reduced over-spill parking in residential areas".
