19 Jan 01STATE-OF-THE-ART SPACE STATION LANDS IN POOLE
People in Poole will be able to view a state-of-the-art ‘space station when it is hoisted onto the roof of Canford Heath Library on Saturday 20 January. The ‘space station’ is part of an arts project to celebrate Canford Heath in the Millennium Year. Other work from the project will be exhibited in the Poole Arts Centre from 20 January to 17 February 2001.
'Face It' in Space on Canford Heath’ is a collaboration between the professional artists group ‘Face It’ and local youth groups. The aim of the project is to design and build a ‘space station’ that contains all things considered by those working on it to be important within the community.
The exhibition at the Poole Arts Centre will show a fly-through of the inside of the ‘space station’ using a computer monitor, and results from the workshops leading up to the building of the final piece, which will include computer manipulated photographs, drawings and models.
The project work, which has been done by members of the St Paul’s and Beacon Youth Groups based in Canford Heath, is being financed by the Millennium Festival Awards for All and supported by Cultural Services, Leisure Services and Youth Services at the Borough of Poole.
Polly Hamilton, Arts Development Manager at the Borough of Poole, said: ‘We are very excited to be involved in this project. It is a fantastic opportunity for young people to work together and develop their artistic skills and appreciation for modern art with the support of professional artists. It will also help them to become more aware of their local environment and community.’
