NEW CASH FOR SCHOOL BUILDINGS

The Government has announced new funding to improve school buildings. The New Deal for Schools funding supports major work needed to address the repairs backlog and also smaller items through devolving money to schools. Further, ‘Seed Challenge’ funding has been announced, where schools raise a proportion of the money needed for building work and the LEA provides the remainder.

Schools in Poole will receive over the next three years a total of £4.8m; with considerably more funding due to be announced by the Government.

Councillor Mrs Annette Brooke, Executive spokesperson for Education said "This funding will enable us to improve the facilities in schools, so that our children can all learn in decent, warm and well-equipped classrooms. Teachers are working very hard to continue to raise standards and better conditions in classrooms will help improve teacher morale and the motivation of the pupils.

Jeff Hart, Chief Adviser, added "The Borough has been addressing the condition of school buildings through producing a detailed Asset Management Plan. This new funding will help schools address some of the difficulties they face on a daily basis. The allocation of direct grants to schools for repairs are also due to rise significantly. Schools will welcome this new funding."
