5 Jan 01POOLE CHILDREN SPEED ALONG INFORMATION HIGHWAY
More pupils in Poole will be able to surf the Net thanks to the introduction of high-speed connections in secondary schools throughout Poole, by March 2001.
All 10 secondary schools in Poole will be provided with faster access to information on the Internet and given the opportunity to visit a number of educational sites created especially for children in Poole. The project has become possible thanks to around £50,000 funding from the Borough of Poole and matched again by another £50,000 from the Government.
Currently, some materials on the Internet can be too demanding for existing Internet connections in many of Poole’s schools. The introduction of new high-speed broadband connections will enable more pupils to work on-line at one time and gain faster access to web sites and services on the Internet.
Anthony Pinnock, ICT Adviser at the Borough of Poole, said: "Information Technology is playing an increasingly valuable part in the classroom. The Internet is becoming a key tool in educating children, making learning more fun and interactive. Children will be able to see what they have learnt in the class room, come to life on a screen in front of them. The introduction of the new connections in schools will open up a number of opportunities in the future for communicating via the Internet, such as email."
In addition, five unique web projects for children are being created for schools throughout Poole to encourage learning. With the help of specialists, the web sites are being designed by local teachers linking up to the National Curriculum and to work alongside regular lessons taught in the classroom.
Mr. Pinnock added: "Not only will pupils benefit from these projects, but they are also a wonderful opportunity for local teachers to develop advanced skills in designing and creating educational materials on the web. Children will be able to take what they have learnt and apply it to what they know about their own area. Learning has never been more exciting."
