Nuffield Household Recycling Centre

Every local authority has a legal obligation to provide a waste disposal site for its residents. The Borough of Poole provides this at Nuffield Industrial Estate.  The decision to keep this facility for Poole residents only was taken due to the increasingly strict targets the Government set local authorities on waste management, such as recycling, waste disposal, landfill etc.  Any penalties placed on local Councils for not meeting targets would have to be born by local residents.

Unfortunately this has meant that those living just outside the boundary of Poole have been directed towards their own council's sites.

Discussions have taken place with officers from Poole and Dorset councils to consider the issue. On the 7th September a report is going to Dorset County Council's Cabinet seeking support for this work and officers from the two authorities are meeting in September with a view to identifying a solution.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Achieving government waste targets is going to be very difficult. We understand that some residents find the rules inconvenient and we will be exploring alternatives. In doing so we must make sure that we consider all of the impact on the Borough's residents and facilities."

Shaun Robson, Head of Environmental and Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The Government rules which govern the ways we measure and record waste flows are extremely complex. Whilst we are hopeful of finding a solution to support the Dorset residents involved we must ensure that Poole residents are not exposed to additional costs."
