9 Jun 06Poole - Cherbourg Links Strengthened
A delegation of Poole Harbour Commissioners
(PHC), the Borough of Poole and Dorset Business
welcomed key representatives from Cherbourg last week with the aim of strengthening links between the two ports.
The Mayor of Cherbourg, M. Bernard Cazeneuve and the President of the Cherbourg Chamber of Commerce, M. Jean-Claude Camus were among the party invited to Poole to meet with local businesses and learn about some of Poole’s leading businesses and future plans.
The visit reciprocates the trip made to France by Poole’s delegation in March, soon after the deepening of the main channel in Poole Harbour, enabling larger ships to utilise the port. Last week’s itinerary included showing the guests some of Poole’s facilities at the Lifeboat College and the technology being developed at Sunseeker’s
headquarters.
"Peter Scott, Chief Executive of Dorset Business said: The combination of a civic and commercial delegation underlined the benefits of partnership working in developing relations with the business community in Cherbourg. We look forward to welcoming new members to Dorset Business as a consequence".
As a result of the visit, both parties agreed to work closer together to build better business relations and look at ways of expanding tourism opportunities, further develop relationships with Brittany Ferries
and encourage the networking of marine businesses.
Councillor Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council said: “We are delighted to play host to our French counterparts and to show them the best of what Poole has to offer. Taking part in these visits enable us to share good practice and increase business opportunities between both sides of the channel. We were very encouraged by the interest shown by our partners in Cherbourg in working more closely in the future and look forward to enjoying a strong and positive working relationship”.
