PARLIAMENT HEARS POOLE’S YOUTH SERVICES EXPRESS THEMSELVES

The Borough of Poole’s Youth Services are helping to raise national publicity for the official launch of the UK Youth Parliament, at a special fund-raising event in the Houses of Parliament, on Wednesday 13th December.

Poole's Youth Services and Youth MP representative Chris Harwood were singled out for the honour after holding the first open elections in the country in October.

Chris, aged 18 from Canford Heath, together with members of the Borough's Youth Services will give a 15 minute presentation describing their experiences of the first election to a specially invited audience of MP’s, British Youth Council, National Youth Agency, Barclays Bank and representatives from national children’s charities, including Save the Children Fund and NSPCC. Peter Cooper, Senior Youth Worker for the Borough of Poole and Lynda Thomson, Young People's Participation Worker for the Borough of Poole will complete the presentation with details of work by Poole’s Youth Services concentrating on the need for consultation with young people on decisions that affect them.

Peter Cooper, Senior Youth Worker at the Borough of Poole, said: "As the first Authority to hold the elections for member for the Youth Parliament, we are delighted to have been chosen to make this presentation. We are very excited about this chance tell people about the quality of the youth work being done both by and for young people in Poole."

Chris Harwood, Poole’s member for the UK Youth Parliament, said: "It will be a challenge speaking in front of such a large audience but I am looking forward to meeting other representatives from across the country. Young people’s ideas are really important and I hope that people will listen to what we have to say and take our views seriously."

In February 2001, Chris Harwood will join over 400 members for the first meeting of the UK Youth Parliament, held in London. In this sitting, a Young People’s manifesto will be developed for presentation to local and national Government, based on young people’s views, ideas and experiences. The opening ceremony will be attended by key ministers and MP’s.
