NEW SIXTH FORM AND HEAD AT ST EDWARD'S SCHOOL

St Edward’s RC/CE VA Comprehensive School in Oakdale, Poole is undergoing some landmark changes – the school has been granted full sixth form status, but is losing its Headteacher of 16 years.

Until this academic year St Edward’s has offered sixth form studies in partnership with its sister school, St Peter’s in Bournemouth. A change of character for the school was approved on 19 October 2000 to give St Edward’s the status of a 12-18 school which can now offer sixth form courses in its own right.

Alan Murphy, Headteacher at St Edward’s, said: "We are very grateful to the governors and staff of St Peter’s and the Borough of Poole for the support they have given us in establishing our sixth form. We will continue to work in partnership with other sixth forms and The College to ensure our students have access to the widest possible range of courses."

Alan Murphy concludes his six month secondment to The Martin Kemp-Welch School in Parkstone, Poole at the end of this term. He then returns to St Edward’s for two final terms before taking early retirement in July.

"The time is right to move on," said Alan Murphy, Headteacher at St Edwards for 16 years. "I have been involved with many changes at the school, including three building projects and the development of the sixth form. It has also been wonderful to be part of the development of one of the very few joint church schools in the country. The energy and passion I have for education will be channelled into tutoring for the Universities of Hull and Leicester."

Jeff Hart, Chief Adviser of Poole LEA, said: "Alan Murphy has contributed a vast amount to education in Poole over the past 16 years. With clear vision and strong determination, he has led the development of St Edward's into an excellent school. The improvements he has made are evident from the outstanding examination results, several new buildings and the intake now including sixth formers.

Jeff Hart added: "Alan has also recently provided superb support to The Martin Kemp-Welch School. Her Majesty’s Inspectors on a very recent visit paid tribute to the way in which Alan has created a strong team culture and moved the school forward. We shall all miss him but hope to continue to benefit from his knowledge, expertise and particularly his skills in motivating teams and individuals.''
