1 Nov 04Clampdown on Illegal Firework Sellers
Following a tip-off the Borough of Poole’sEnvironmental and Consumer Protection Services have seized almost 100kg of fireworks from an unregistered trader – retailing from an unlicensed premises in Ringwood Road, Poole. The fireworks were seized as they were not safely stored posing a risk to public safety and the premises was not licensed. Michele Laker was prosecuted by Bournemouth Magistrates Court where she pleaded guilty to three offences. Magistrates imposed fines of £2000 and court costs of £250. The fireworks are now awaiting destruction. Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Fireworks are inherently dangerous. It is vital they are safely stored and sold. The Council treat such non-compliance very seriously and will take swift action to deal with such risks. It is also timely to remind retailers that anyone buying fireworks must be over 18. Retailers should ask for proof of age if they have any doubts about the age of anyone attempting to buy fireworks. I urge anyone letting off fireworks to consider others, avoid causing a nuisance and do so before 11pm." People need to be especially careful when fireworks are offered for sale in outlets which may not be registered or where sellers are obviously acting illegally, such as selling in pubs and car parks. When fireworks are seen being offered for sale in unusual circumstances, the fireworks may have been imported illegally and past experience has shown that they may not be safe to use as they often do not comply with the required safety legislation and British Standards. All reputable fireworks suppliers will only deliver their products to registered retailers. If Poole residents have concerns about the legality of any fireworks sales, please contact Environmental And Consumer Protection Services on 01202 261700.
