DON'T LET THE COWBOYS CASH IN ON STORM DAMAGE

Borough of Poole Consumer Protection Services is warning Poole residents to beware of cowboy traders if repairs are needed after storm damage. Although Poole has not been hit as badly as other areas residents should still be prepared on how to deal with traders offering to tackle repairs such as missing roof tiles and broken fences.

Consumers should always obtain quotes before work is carried out, get receipts for jobs completed and use traders who are members of recognised trade associations.

"Don't let the severe weather give the cowboys the opportunity to leave a trail of shoddy workmanship and hefty bills behind them" said Peter Pawlowski, Head of Borough of Poole's Consumer Protection Services

As homeowners all over the UK count the cost of the damage caused to their property legitimate builders, plumbers, carpenters and other craftspeople will be working at full stretch to keep up with repairs.

"We fear that rogue traders will see the storm-lashing suffered by many homes as an excuse to make some easy money. Always be wary if approaches are made by traders you do not know. Generally it makes sense to be prepared such as keeping emergency contact numbers for the gas, electricity and water suppliers and insurance company handy just in case," he added.

Consumer Protection Services advises people affected by storm damage to speak to their insurance companies before engaging anyone to carry out repair work. It can often be a requirement to only use businesses approved by the insurers.

In the case of flood damage, electricity and gas companies will make free inspections to advise on safety work required.
