1 Nov 00NEW MOBILE SPEED DETECTION AND WARNING SIGN
Motorists who have driven along Lindsay Road in Branksome Park this past week may have noticed a new flashing warning sign which detects speeding drivers and advises them to slow down, as well as reminding them of the speed limit in the road.
The sign, which cost £6,000 is fully mobile as it is battery and solar powered. The first of its kind in Dorset, the sign will be moved around Poole to speeding hotspots at monthly intervals. It forms part of the Council’s measures to improve road safety and fits with the national Think! Campaign.
Martin Baker, Borough of Poole’s Road Safety Engineer, said
"The numbers of drivers who fail to comply with the speed limits on our roads is a concern to us, because excessive speed is a major contributory factor to road traffic collisions. It’s inevitable that the higher the speed the greater the risk of more serious injury or even death in the event of a crash."
"Most people consider themselves to be safe drivers, but speeders are still more likely to go on to cause deaths and serious injuries on the roads because they drive too fast, rather than sticking to the speed limit," he added.
