Newfoundland Drive Subway Closing For Maintenance

Major work to refurbish and renovate the subway that links Baiter with Poole Park is due to start on Wednesday 17 September 2003. Work is expected to last for six weeks, during which time the subway will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists.

The Newfoundland Drive subway will be undergoing a major overhaul, including the complete removal of existing wall coatings and repair of damage to the concrete before the tiling work starts. The inside of the subway walls and approach ramp walls on the Baiter side will have new hardwearing ceramic tiles attached. Work will also involve repainting of the subway ceiling and railings.

Jim Bright, Head of Transportation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "This subway suffers from a high degree of vandalism and graffiti. Existing coatings deteriorate every time graffiti is removed from the walls and it has therefore been decided to put high quality tiling in place that will be more durable. We also hope to apply anti-graffiti coating to the tiles. Closure of the subway is unavoidable for health and safety reasons and we will endeavour to re-open it as soon as possible."

Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio holder for Local Economy said: "It is extremely unfortunate that we are having to close a major public right of way due to vandalism. However it is important that these works are carried out to ensure we keep Poole in the standard to which we and you, the residents and visitors to Poole have come to expect. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their patience."

The two nearest, alternative crossing points of the railway are through the Railway Bridge that links Poole Park with Whitecliff Road or over nearby Seldown Bridge.
