9 Oct 00LOCAL LEARNING DISABLED ARTISTS' FILM HITS THE SCREENS
A short film made by a team of four learning disabled performers from Poole will be premiered at the Poole Arts Centre on Wednesday 11 October.
The film, called 'An Artist's Life', was made by the Borough of Poole's day centre users Andrew Hiscock from Lodge Hill Centre, Sandra Gibb and Steven Breeze, both from Sea View Centre and Suzanne Lambert from Elizabeth House.
'An Artist's Life' is due to receive a national screening at 'Moving On' - the Festival of Theatre by People with Learning Disabilities, a national event which takes place from 18 to 21 October. Anna Shiels, Arts Programme Manager for the Adult Social Services Provider Unit said, "The film takes a brief glimpse at the lives of four very different artists, touching on their work, their aspirations and their private lives in a revealing and humorous way."
The twelve-minute film evolved from the 'We Are Sailing' video arts project, which is part of the Borough of Poole Adult Social Services (Provider Unit) Arts Programme. Heather Barnett, a digital artist who was commissioned for the project, worked alongside a core group of service users to consult on and develop art skills in the day centres.
The film was produced in association with Volcano, an Awards For All funded digital arts programme at Poole Arts Centre, and Dorset Self Advocacy. It was made possible through funding from Southern Arts, Poole Arts Centre, and the Borough of Poole's Cultural Services (Arts Development) and Adult Social Services (Provider Unit).
