OPENING OF HERITAGE CYCLE ROUTE

A new Heritage Cycle Route is opening in Poole on Sunday 15 October. Cyclists and pedestrians are invited to collect a free leaflet from the Fish Shambles (by the Lord Nelson pub) on Poole Quay, any time on the day between 10.00am and 3.00pm and to cycle or walk all or part of the 7½ mile circular route.

The route is a result of a grant of £16,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and co-operation between Poole Agenda 21 and the Borough of Poole. It visits places of historic interest in Poole town centre and Upton Country Park.

Andy Hadley of Poole Agenda 21 said: "The route provides cyclists with an insight into the rich history of Poole Old Town. It also opens routes into the middle of town for shopping and commuting and, with ever rising petrol and parking charges, will help people to choose to leave the car at home. We have been pleased to work with the Borough of Poole and the Heritage Lottery Fund to achieve this scheme."

The route links onto existing cycleways from Creekmoor, Broadstone and Westbourne. Poole Bus and Railway stations are close to the route and cyclists bringing their bikes by car can park at Upton Country Park, Poole Park, Slipway or Whitecliff car parks. (Parking charges may apply). The free leaflets have a map of the route together with photographs of old Poole and brief histories of the areas visited.

Sally Funnell, Cycling/Walking officer, Borough of Poole, said: "The section of the route that runs along the Quay from the Lord Nelson to Sea Music will be completed in November when other work on the Quay in connection with the new sea defence wall is taking place. Until this work has been finished cyclists are asked to walk along this part of the Quay or cycle up Old Orchard and down the High Street."

After Sunday 15th October, the free leaflet will be available from the Tourist office in the Waterfront Museum (on Poole High Street), and at the Visitor Centre at Upton Country Park.

Details of the route can also be downloaded from the Poole Agenda 21 web site, at www.geocities.com/rainforest/canopy/7418/index.html
