4 Oct 00PLANNING AHEAD FOR COY POND
Local residents are being invited to discuss the future of Coy Pond at 7:30 pm at St. John's Church Hall, Surrey Road, Bournemouth, on Monday 9 October 2000.
One of Poole’s most popular open spaces and an area of outstanding beauty, Coy Pond and surrounding gardens run from upper part of the Pleasure Gardens (formerly known as Surrey Road Gardens) down to the sea at Bournemouth Pier.
Managed by the Borough of Poole, the area is a designated public open space. Issues currently being considered in the area include: the future management of the site, the pond and stream, trees, landscape, pathways, lighting and cycle link proposals.
The Council works with many voluntary groups, such as the Friends of Coy Pond, who use their detailed knowledge of the area to help plan and prioritise work. Started in 1998, the Friends of Coy Pond have used their hard work and enthusiasm on many projects. Using materials provided by the Council, the Friends work has included improvements to the rockery, digging land drainage and planting more than 900 bulbs.
Andy Osborne, Parks Officer, Borough of Poole, said: ''By working with local residents to develop a plan to manage and maintain the area, we can make sure that the unique character of the pond and the surrounding gardens is preserved. It will also help us plan for the changing needs of people who use the park which is enjoyed by a huge number of local residents, many of whom give up their weekends to keep it such a beautiful area. To make sure we get it right, we would like to see as many people at the meeting as possible, so if you have an interest, please come along and help us plan for the future.''
