29 Sep 00POOLE: CANFORD HEATH BY-ELECTION RESULTS
Two new Councillors were elected in Poole’s Canford Heath by-election today.
In a closely fought contest and after one partial recount and one full recount, Canford Heath’s newly elected Councillors are Jeff Allen (Lib Dem) and Sandra Moore (Lib Dem).
The election followed the resignation of Cllrs Andrew Muspratt (Lib Dem) and Marian Mackenzie (Lib Dem) in August.
Canford Heath has a traditionally low voter turn out. However, 33.5% of voters turned out to vote in Thursday’s by-election, 10% up on May of last year.
The results mean that the overall seats for Poole Council remain 19 Lib Dem, 17 Conservative and 3 Labour.
Poole Council is made up of 39 Councillors from 13 wards across the Borough.
Three Councillors represent each ward. A party must have 20 or more seats to have overall control of the Council. As no party has 20 seats or more, the Borough remains a "hung Council" with no single party in overall control.
The election results are as follows:
Jeff Allen Liberal Democrat 1747
Peter Bowler Conservative 1649
George Inglis Labour 216
Sandra Moore Liberal Democrat 1825
Roy Oakton Conservative 1645
Paul Westbrook-Merry Labour 177
Following the by-election, Councillors for the Canford Heath ward are as follows:
Cllr Graham Curtis, Lib Dem
Cllr Sandra Moore, Lib Dem
Cllr Jeff Allen, Lib Dem
