29 Sep 00KERB RECYCLING IN POOLE
Poole's black box recycling scheme collections have been disrupted due to staff shortages and vehicle breakdowns.Action to recruit new staff and a review of the vehicles used to collect the kerbside recycling is already under way. Normally collected from homes once every two weeks, the popular scheme helped Poole become one of the top two Councils in the country for recycling last year.
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, said: "We apologise if we have not been able to collect your black recycling box recently. We know people in Poole like the convenience of the scheme and are asking them to bear with us while action is taken to improve the service. Nationally, recycling is coming under increasing pressure due to the shortage of markets for recycled goods. Locally we are also facing pressures due to the closure of companies who recycle our waste."
He added: "Residents are still able to take their recycling to one of Poole's 73 recycling centres, such as those based in Supermarket car parks. Alternatively, kerbside collections will take place at least once every 4 weeks, so if a collection is missed double will be collected on the next visit."
"Whilst every effort is being made to collect recycling boxes, we are asking local people not to call in if their box is missed. Once the situation is resolved we will let everyone know."
