POOLE SCHOOLS REACH TARGETS

The national test results for eleven year olds, published today, show that schools in Poole have reached tough Government targets. Standards improved in English, mathematics and science across the Borough.

In English, the proportion of pupils reaching the expected level of achievement rose by 4% from 1999, to reach the target of 75% set by the Government two years ago. In mathematics, 67% of pupils reached the expected level, an increase of 3% on last year. Pupils achieved particularly well in science, with 85% achieving an impressive 7% rise on last year.

Jeff Hart, Chief Adviser said "Schools have worked really hard over the years to achieve these pleasing results. Many schools are celebrating great improvements on last year’s results and this is partly due to the impact of the National Strategies for Literacy and Numeracy."

"Schools in Poole have undertaken major training programmes in English and mathematics. These improved results demonstrate the successful outcomes of this training and the detailed planning for the daily Literacy and Numeracy hours."

"Boys and girls in Poole achieve equally in mathematics and science. In English, however, girls do better than boys in line with the national trend."

"We must remember that these results show only one aspect of a school’s performance and don’t reflect the varied range of achievement in such areas as the arts, sport or community involvement."
