3 Dec 04Dredging Work at Coy Pond
The Borough of Poole is undertaking some minor dredging work at Coy Pond to overcome the natural silting of the pond so as to maintain its character and water quality. The work will take place on Tuesday December 7 and is expected to last no more than a day or two. The dredging consists of lowering a small section of the pond bed that has become silted with natural material. The material is being dug out during this month with a small excavator and being placed onto the bank of the pond. Although it is black in appearance it will compost down into natural soil over time. The Council has discussed with the Environment Agency the method of working to minimise any release of silt into the Bourne Stream. Council and Environment Agency staff will monitor the work to ensure there is no detriment to the quality of the water within the Bourne Stream. If this small operation is successful the Council will investigate undertaking further dredging within the pond over the coming months. Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Maintaining this local pond is an important environmental issue which should have benefits for local wildlife." Phil Jones, Chairman of The Friends of Coy Pond, said: "We warmly welcome the Council's initiative with this partial dredging which is desperately needed. The fish in particular will benefit from the increased depth to protect them from predators. We are optimistic that the process will be a success and look forward to its continuation."
