6 Sep 00IT’S LOCAL DEMOCRACY WEEK IN POOLE
Poole residents are invited to come and meet Councillors and officers next week at a series of ‘drop in’ sessions at Poole’s libraries.
The initiative is tied in with Local Democracy Week, organised by the Local Government Association. The week is designed to raise the profile of local democracy and encourage the public to take a more active part in how their local Council makes decisions. This year’s themes are Local Leadership - Local Choice and Tomorrow’s Council and fit well with the new Local Government Act which requires every Council to draw up proposals for new forms of local decision making.
New information panels detailing who Poole’s Councillors are and the plans for modernising the Council’s structure will be launched at each of Poole’s ten libraries together with a new Community Post Box scheme, which offers another way to contact your Councillor. Residents just need to jot down their query or request for information and pop it into the post box in the library and it will go straight to their relevant Councillor with no need for a stamp.
Bob Harris, Head of Democratic Services, Borough of Poole said;
‘The Council makes decisions that affect local people every day. Local Democracy Week is an ideal opportunity for the Council to meet residents, answer any questions or concerns they may have and gain their views on our plans to modernise the way that we work.’
