30 Aug 00CRACKDOWN ON CRIME REWARDED IN POOLE
Long service and community spirit will be rewarded on Thursday when Broadstone’s Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator Denis Phillips will be presented with Poole’s top crime busting award.
Awarded by the Borough of Poole’s Community Safety Working Party, the "John Jay Shield" recognises the efforts of a group or individual in the fight to reduce and prevent crime in Poole.
Denis has been actively involved in Broadstone’s Neighbourhood Watch for over 8 years, serving as Chairman for the last six. Working tirelessly, Denis and his team of co-ordinators promote neighbourliness and advice on crime prevention for local people.
With a membership of between 3000-4000, Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch is one of the largest in Poole.
Working with the Borough of Poole and Dorset Police in promoting community safety issues, Denis has represented Poole at various community safety conferences. His Neighbourhood Watch Group have also provided the Police at Gravel Hill Police Station with a brand new camcorder to help in recording incidents of anti-social behaviour.
Paula Gilbert, Community Safety Assistant for the Borough of Poole, said: "Denis is always willing to help and is supportive of any initiative which will be of benefit to the community. The John Jay Shield is an ideal way to show our appreciation of his efforts".
Denis said: "I first got involved in Neighbourhood Watch because I wanted to put something back into the community. It’s not just looking out for villains, its neighbourliness and looking after their interests when they’re away. Belonging to Neighbourhood Watch makes you feel safer."
Denis is also involved with Streetwise, the interactive safety centre which provides safe environments for both children and adults to experience a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Scenarios include a full-size house, beach, high street and park area.
Alison Curtis, Manager of Streetwise, said: "All of our volunteers are people who gain great satisfaction in being a safety guide. They firmly believe that each safety tour they do might be the one which prevents another tragic accident and all the heartache that goes with it. Denis has been a volunteer from the very beginning and is a very special person."
