Street Litter is Going Green

Sweet wrappers, empty cans and food packaging. These are all things that you can accumulate on a shopping trip to Poole Town Centre, but next time you have rubbish to dispose of along the High Street, look out for the new recycling litter bins.

The innovative recycling litter bins are on trial outside Woolworths to encourage the public to start recycling their litter. The new bins form part of the Borough of Poole’s Pride in Poole campaign which is committed to cleaning up Poole’s streets and increasing the amount of waste recycled.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "People tend to associate recycling with materials they save at home and consider litter as something different, but this is simply not the case. This initiative will show how easy it can be to recycle litter whilst on the move by using the new bins and we hope they will significantly contribute to meeting tough government recycling targets. If successful, the bins will help to ensure the diversion of waste from landfill whilst as the same time help to keep Poole’s streets clean and litter free."

The new bins can accept cans, plastics, glass and paper and if they prove successful, they could appear in other areas throughout the town.

Rachel Holt, Recycling Officer, Environmental and Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: "Recycling is something everyone can do and by introducing recycling within the High Street I hope it will show that recycling should be part of everyday life, wherever you are – not just at home."

The bins will be emptied on a daily basis and their use monitored over the next three months. To find out more, contact Environmental and Consumer Protection Services on 01202 261700.
