EUROPEAN CAR FREE DAY - FRIDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER 2000
Organisations across Dorset are preparing to support the European "In Town Without My Car" initiative on Friday 22nd September 2000. Following several years of successful campaigns across mainland Europe, the UK is joining its neighbouring countries in promoting quieter streets, a cleaner air, less noise and more freedom for pedestrians, cyclists and bus and train users.
Although there will be no official street closures in Dorset, many businesses are taking this opportunity to look at alternative ways of working and promoting "greener" travel to their staff.
Kathy Saunders, Travel Awareness Officer for Poole Council, co-ordinating the Dorset activities, said "It’s a great opportunity to encourage people to think again about the way they travel. Some journeys could be made on foot, by bike or by public transport occasionally, and we will be supporting all the Dorset organisations who wish to take part on the day."
Further press releases will follow giving details of specific activities planned for the day.
