22 Aug 00GET HANDS ON WITH STATE OF THE ART SIMULATOR ON POOLE QUAY
Poole people will be able to experience the latest in hi-tech simulator displays courtesy of The Household Cavalry and Royal Armoured Corps Recruiting Team at the Liverpool Victoria Summer Festival Evening this Thursday. The team, based at Bovington, will be equipped with a 12ft, seven ton Sabre reconnaissance tank and a specialist tank gunnery simulator, opposite the Portsmouth Hoy, Poole Quay. For anyone wanting to pit their wits against the programme, the state of the art computer simulator is used in train crews in gunnery techniques and comes complete with "real" tank controls.
Captain Spencer Cushing, Queen's Royal Lancers, said: "The simulator gives people a real opportunity to see how difficult it is to control a tank and gives us a great chance to put them through their paces. Whether you just want to have a go on the simulator or have any questions about a career in the Army, members of the Corps will be on hand to answer your questions. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you".
Festival goers this week will also be able to climb aboard a RNLI 16ft inflatable Class D inshore lifeboat. Located opposite the Lord Nelson Pub, Poole's two resident Brede Class and Atlantic 75 Lifeboats will also be moored alongside the Quay.
John Clark, Coxswain, Poole Lifeboat Station, said: "People will be able to get aboard the D Class inshore lifeboat and weather permitting we hope there will also be a chance to explore Poole's working Lifeboats with members of the crew on hand to give an insight into life on board".
Poole's Summer Festival Evenings are held every Thursday throughout July and August and attract over 20,000 people each week with an array of live music, street performers and entertainment.
Anne Simpson, Special Event Co-ordinator, said: "If you've ever wanted to find out how to drive a tank or get close to an RNLI rescue lifeboat, this week's festival will be a real treat. As well as all the usual fun and games, popular local band Carve will be performing live at the Fish Shambles at around 9.00pm. As ever the spectacular fireworks will round off what should be a perfect mix of family entertainment for everyone."
