Beach Clean Up Completed

A 250 metre stretch of beach from Flag Head Chine to Shore Road has been given a clean bill of health following a major clean up operation.

Now restored to it's former glory, and with judging just around the corner, hopes are high that Poole will receive it's Blue Flag award for its beaches this year.

Following three weeks of intensive work, approximately 3500 tonnes of recently placed sand has been removed from the beach after the discovery of a small piece of asbestos cement.

Andrew Flockhart, Policy Director, said: "As part of a thorough process agreed with the Environment Agency, independent inspectors have examined all the sand removed from the site. Whilst we are extremely fortunate that only small levels of asbestos cement were present, it was essential that the removal was dealt with in this rigorous way. Now that the work has been completed and the beach restored, we can be confident that our beaches are now back to the top quality they are renown for."

The beach re-opened to the public on 6 February and the estimated costs of the removal are expected to be in the region of £35,000.

An investigation into how the situation occurred is underway and is due to report in the Spring.
