IT INJECTION FOR POOLE’S LIBRARIES

Libraries in Poole will be increasing their IT power thanks to £156,000 New Opportunities lottery funding.

Awarded under the Community Access to Lifelong Learning, the funding is part of a UK wide plan, called the People’s Network, which aims to link all libraries to the Internet and the National Grid for Learning (the national focus point for learning on the Internet) by 2002.

In Poole, the funding will be used to increase public access to computers by more than doubling those available in the Borough’s ten libraries.

Lyn Pullen, Library Services Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "This is marvellous news for Poole. The computers we already have are really popular and with our plans to offer free Internet access by the end of the year, we know the demand will be even bigger. With the extra terminals we will be able to cater for those who want to surf the net, type their own document, look up a reference enquiry or just learn about using computers. The computers at the Central Library will form part of the exciting refurbishment project which will be in place by late 2001".

The funding announcement follows plans for a new look Central Library which is due to undergo its first refurbishment in 30 years and will include a brand new IT training suite.

Editor’s Notes:
In the last three years, the number of computers in Poole’s libraries has increased from three terminals to 31.

Services already on offer include Internet access, word processing and information on CD-ROM; there is a special terminal at the Central Library with facilities to help disabled people and those suffering from dyslexia. All terminals are linked to colour printers, most of which can print on A3 paper.
