YOUNG CARERS SAIL AWAY TO FUN DAY OUT

1 August 2000

A group of young carers in Poole are being treated to a fun day out today courtesy of Parkstone Yacht Club.

Young carers are children who help to look after a family member who has an illness or disability. In Poole, there are currently 60 families with a total of 100 children in contact with young carers groups.

Today, children from Parkstone Yacht Club's youth group and Poole's young carers will set sail in small craft to enjoy a day on Brownsea Island. Some of the day's activities include a picnic and storyteller before they sail back to the Club for a barbeque.

Estelle Barr, Young Carers Support Officer, Social Services, Borough of Poole said: "Parkstone Yacht Club has provided a wonderful opportunity for young carers to have a relaxing break during the summer holiday, make new friends and have some fun.

She added: "We also have three groups in Poole for young carers aged between 10 - 17 years which gives them the chance to have some fun, offer support and help remove isolation sometimes felt by children or young people because of their caring role."
