POOLE ENTRIES SOUGHT FOR NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN CIVIC TRUST AWARDS 2001

Outstanding new buildings, restoration projects, public art works, landscape and rural design schemes in Poole are being invited to take part in a national architectural and environmental design competition.

The annual scheme, is run by the Civic Trust, a charity which campaigns for a better built environment, in partnership with local Councils and is widely recognised as the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in Europe.

John Biggs, Urban Design and Conservation Officer, Borough of Poole and local co-ordinator for the Awards, said: "This is a really prestigious award and successful buildings gets a lot of publicity nationwide. The last time buildings in this area were entered for the Award, the flats at Conning Towers in Canford Cliffs, won a Commendation."

The Civic Trust Awards aim to raise awareness of the importance of design in improving the environment by recognising outstanding projects in the fields of architecture, planning, landscape, public art, rural and urban design.

Recognition can take the form of an Award, Commendation or Mention. The 2001 programme also features 10 Special Awards. The Special Awards promote excellence in specific areas of development and are sponsored by a broad range of organisations from the commercial and public sectors.

Entries are invited from all high quality building and landscape projects, regardless of size or type, completed between 1 January 1998 and 30 September 2000. The deadline for entries is Friday, 15 September 2000 and anyone can enter a project with the owner’s and occupier’s permission.

The Civic Trust Awards scheme is run on a two-year cycle: one year entries are invited from the UK’s major cities; the next year from the countryside, country towns and smaller cities. The 2001 Civic Trust Awards covers the countryside, country towns and smaller cities.

· For the scheme making the best contribution to the local built environment as a whole.

Partnership Award sponsored by English Partnerships:
· For the best regeneration or development project involving a partnership between the private, public and community sectors.

Lighting Award jointly sponsored by Thorn Lighting Limited and GE Lighting
· For the lighting scheme that most successfully respects and enhances the architectural fabric of a building or built environment.

Sustainability Award jointly sponsored by Willmott Dixon and the Civic Trust
· For the Scheme that demonstrates the best application of the principles of sustainable design and construction.
