£1 MILLION CCTV NETWORK INSTALLED IN POOLE

Work to install a new £1 million crime busting CCTV network is underway in Poole.

Awarded under the Government’s CCTV initiative in January this year, the £953,360 scheme will provide 24 hour monitored CCTV for Poole’s town centre car parks, the High Street, the Quay and Turlin Moor.

Work to lay the Town Centre ducts which will carry the CCTV camera fibre optic connections was completed in July. Work to connect Turlin Moor will begin today (31 July) on Holes Bay Road and is expected to take 8 weeks.

In order to minimise disruption, the work will be completed in partnership with Southern Electric who will be installing new electricity cable links to a new substation at Sterte, Holes Bay.

The route of the work will follow the western verge alongside Holes Bay Road to Upton Bypass. After approximately 250m, the ducts will be taken into Upton Country Park to minimise disruption on the route to Turlin Moor.

In order to complete the work, closure of one lane will take place as follows:
· for two weeks from 31 July on the northbound section of Holes Bay Road between Sterte Avenue West and Broadstone Way
· for two weeks from 14 August on the northbound section between Broadstone Way and Upton Bypass
· for two weeks from 28 August on the westbound section of Upton Bypass for approximately 250m from the Holes Bay Road roundabout
· for two/three days from 31 July, a southbound lane of Holes Bay Road between Sterte Avenue West and Broadstone Way. This work will be timed to avoid the morning rush hour.

This section of the ducting work is due to be completed by the end of September.

Graham Curtis, Chairman of the Public Protection Committee, said; "CCTV has been proven to help reduce crime, makes people feel safer and will benefit everyone. By working with Southern Electric we will ensure this essential cabling work is completed in the best way to help minimise disruption."

The CCTV project is a crime reduction initiative, which is intended to reduce the incidence of crime, deter anti-social behaviour and create a safer environment for residents and visitors. The cameras will be monitored 24 hours a day throughout the year and recordings made for evidence purposes if required.
