MILLENNIUM YOUTH GAMES

Over 160 young people from Poole and Purbeck took part in the Dorset and Wiltshire Millennium Youth Games on 25 June 2000.

Aged between 9 and 14, the team was one of nine who joined the competition based in Swindon. During the event, Poole and Purbeck’s U13 Basketball and Swimming teams proved the best in Dorset and have qualified for this year’s National Youth Games.

With over 7,000 competitors, the national finals held in Southampton between the 17th - 20th August 2000 will out rank the Commonwealth Games in size.

Michaela Hutchings, Senior Sports Development Officer said "The event was a great success with everybody taking part enjoying the experience of being involved with a national competition where the emphasis was on taking part rather than just winning. I am extremely proud of the whole team. The young athletes competed in the true spirit of the Games and consequently returned home smiling, having had an enjoyable day and motivated to continue playing sport. My congratulations go out to the whole team especially to those who earned medals".

She added: "I would like to wish the Basketball and Swimming Teams every success in the Grand Finals and I look forward to being with them in Southampton, cheering them on. I would like to thank everyone who helped with the teams prior to, and on the day of the Games".

Across the eight competition sports, athletics, swimming, tennis, basketball, football, rugby, hockey and netball, Poole & Purbeck acquitted themselves well with the following teams picking up medals; U13 Netball - Gold, U11 Athletics - Silver, U15 Girls Hockey - Silver, U11 Mixed Tag Rugby - Silver, U13 Basketball - Bronze, U13 Swimming - Bronze.
