21 Oct 04Swimmers Step to it at Rossmore
Elderly and disabled swimmers to Rossmore Leisure Centre will be able to enter the water more easily thanks to a set of improved steps into the pool. The specially commissioned steps costing £1,000 were fitted after requests from some swimmers who found conventional vertical ladder-style steps difficult to use but were keen to retain their independence for as long as possible. Tim Hill, Leisure Centres Manager, Borough of Poole said: "The point of these steps is in response to requests from users who want to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Some people do not want to be seen being lowered into the pool on a hoist and particularly the floor as they find it embarrassing drawing attention to their disability. The new access steps overcome this by providing a gentler entry rather than the traditional vertical ladder." Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment including Leisure, Borough of Poole said: "These steps are a relatively simple idea which make a huge difference to many of the less able users of the swimming pool at Rossmore. Swimming is a popular activity with people of all ages and abilities and the steps are already proving to be a big hit. It is intended to extend the idea to the Dolphin Swimming Pool shortly."
