15 May 06Poole Beaches Celebrate Prestigious Blue Flags
Poole’s beautiful beaches are celebrating following today’s announcement of prestigious blue flag awards
for its beaches.
In addition to Sandbanks’s record-breaking 19th Blue Flag, Canford Cliffs Beach, Shore Road and Branksome Chine beaches in Poole are also celebrating after receiving their awards once again, ranking them among the best in the world.
The Blue Flag Awards for beaches are given annually by ENCAMS
and are valid for one year. It is an international recognition for well managed beaches which have good bathing water quality, regular beach cleaning, provision of lifesaving equipment and first aid, refreshments, suitable toilet facilities and a commitment to the environment.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “I am delighted that Poole's beaches have been recognised yet again by the Blue Flag judges. In addition to the six Seaside Awards we already have, we can be rightly proud of our success, which is made possible due to the hard work and commitment from our staff. The standards get tougher each year which makes these latest awards all the more special. We are very lucky to have such outstanding beaches on our doorstep and are looking forward to a fantastic summer season."
Matti Raudsepp, Open Spaces Manager, Leisure Services, said: “The awards reflect the dedication of our beaches team, who work incredibly hard to ensure Poole’s beaches are of the highest standard. The beach replenishment that took place at the end of last year means that Poole’s beaches are looking better than ever with lovely white sand covering the 3.8miles of beaches around the Bay.”
With hundreds of thousands of visitors coming to Poole every year there’s plenty to do. As well as enjoying the clean beaches and water, visitors can enjoy the 18-hole crazy golf course and 18-hole putting green, beach massage by qualified staff, hair braiding and henna tattoos. Recent initiatives at Sandbanks include creating sand dunes, recycling waste and protecting sand lizards and other wildlife. In addition, Summer Breeze…on the Beach
with the popular fireworks finale returns to Shore Road every Thursday evening throughout August.
