A New Direction For Poole - Listen To Leader's Speech

Listen To Leader's Speech

At tonight’s meeting of Full Council, Poole’s Leader, Cllr Brian Leverett, set out the direction of the Borough for the next four years.

With a strong emphasis on working within planned budgets to provide effective, cost-efficient services, Brian outlined five long-term priorities for the Council over the next four years:

  • developing young people as the future of the town \n
  • developing a strong mixed local economy \n
  • Pride in Poole – and particularly its environment \n
  • developing Poole’s community \n
  • working with partners to promote health & well being

Cllr Brian Leverett, said: "Our focus on these priorities will provide Poole with a new long term direction that reflects the concerns of local people and provides a coherent response to the challenges before the town. There are major opportunities ahead. Poole’s regeneration will be key to delivering a comprehensive package of affordable housing, public open space as well as better access to our water frontages, the port and between the Town Centre and Hamworthy. But we will only be able to deliver these by working in partnership with the local community. In return we are determined to be an efficient Council and it is essential that taxpayers are confident their money is spent wisely, effectively and fairly."

To help deliver the priorities, the Council will be working to develop a number of specific areas. These include:

  • lobbying the Government for more school funding \n
  • launching a ‘State of Education’ debate \n
  • examining the possible introduction of Street Wardens \n
  • making street cleansing and grounds maintenance contracts more effective \n
  • increasing recycling \n
  • introducing an award to recognise individuals or groups for their community spirit \n
  • bringing in outside agencies to invest in and possibly manage Council assets such as Leisure Centres \n
  • working towards Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) of Council housing \n
  • a review of transportation policies including parking and new road links for local businesses

More detail on the priorities will be developed over the coming months. A full copy of the speech is available on the website and for the first time, anyone with access to Media Player will be able to hear it via boroughofpoole.com.
