27 Sep 06Poole Bridge Closure
Poole Bridge will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians between 23.45 on Friday 20 October to 05:30 on Monday 30 October for essential maintenance works.
The Borough of Poole will be operating a pedestrian ferry service from Custom House Steps to Ferry Road Quay, on a daily basis, from 06:00 Saturday 21 October to 23:00 Sunday 29 October, the precise operational details will be confirmed in due course.
The maintenance works include resurfacing the whole of the Bridge and the carriageway on Blandford Road from Shapwick Road to Bridge Approach, replacing the concrete deck infill on the Bridge Track and Lifting Spans and realigning and resurfacing the junction between the Bridge, West Quay Road, West Street and The Quay.
Access to and from The Quay will be maintained as much as possible during the bridge closure, although there may be a short overnight period of restriction when the surfacing work is carried out.
To complete work as soon as possible and maintain lifting operations a special quick curing concrete will be used for the replacement of the Lifting/Track Span deck infill. This concrete will require a minimum of 12 hours to harden before the lifting spans can be raised to the vertical position. The short time period in which the works have to be carried out means the concrete needs to be cast on both lifting spans at the same time. In addition lifting the spans without the balancing weight of the concrete could damage the drive mechanism
For these reasons after a lift at 20:00 on Sunday 22 October until 09:30 on Monday 23 October the Bridge can not be lifted.
All other the scheduled bridge lifts will continue to take place, but will only be single span throughout the closure period. The Council will also endeavour to provide single span commercially requested lifts where possible.
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy said: “Obviously we are well aware of the impact that this bridge closure will have, however these works are absolutely essential in ensuring the longevity of the bridge and we will be doing all we can to minimise the disruption. We look forward to the day when the Twin Sails Bridge is in operation which will play a huge part in easing situations such as this.”
