Twin Sails Bridge Closer Than Ever Before

The proposed Twin Sails Bridge is closer than ever before to being delivered.

November 29 2004 is a key date in the plans to bring about the second harbour crossing - the icon of Poole's Full Sail Ahead regeneration plans. The date marks the submission of the Borough of Poole's Transport and Works Act Order to the Department of Transport.

The Order, which has been almost two years in preparation, runs to several volumes and demonstrates to Government that the existing crossing and the new bridge can operate together safely and effectively. It also shows that the impacts of the new bridge, during and after construction, on the sensitive environment of the harbour, have been fully taken into account.

To mark the occasion Hamworthy school children will join civic leaders in celebrating the TWA Order submission. The children will be tracking the progress of the bridge as it goes through this vital stage and begins to take shape.

Cllr Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, said: "We are at the stage where the Twin Sails Bridge is closer than ever and today marks the reaching of a significant milestone along the way. We still have a way to go with some tough hurdles ahead but never before has the bridge been more achievable. It is particularly fitting that the young people of the town join with us in celebration as it is our future generations who will benefit most from the unique opportunities the bridge will create in terms of homes, jobs and superb public areas."

Following the TWA Order submission, an eight-week consultation period will take place through December and January. Depending on the level of representations and objections, a public inquiry may be held in 2005 and a decision from the Secretary of State is expected in 2006.

Council Leader Cllr Brian Leverett, said: "The launch of the TWA Order means that the journey to provide a second harbour crossing which Poole has so long called for and so desperately needs is well underway."
