Bike to Work day picnic

Staff from Poole Council and Poole Hospital will get on their bikes to celebrate National Bike to Work Day, on Tuesday 20 June 2000.

The Borough of Poole’s Bicycle User Group (BUG) and Poole Hospital NHS Trust, are holding a lunch time picnic in Poole Park for all employees cycling to work on the day.

As extra encouragement, each cyclist will be able to indulge in a tasty and healthy lunch provided by the Hospital’s catering department. There will be competitions, advice and an expert, "Dr Bike" from Halfords bike section will also be on hand to carry out bicycle safety checks.

Kathy Saunders, Borough of Poole Travel Awareness Officer said: "Last year over 60 people came along to join in the fun and made a commitment to cycling to work! This year we are really pleased that staff from Poole Hospital will be joining us. Both organisations are committed to improving the local environment by working with staff to share information on greener forms of transport. By promoting bus services, car sharing and cycling we can all make a difference and enjoy healthy and practical transport options which can also be lots of fun!"

Due to the campaign’s success last year, the Civic Centre bike cage has been doubled in size to accommodate the increasing numbers of employees cycling to work.

The idea of cycling to work has received very positive feedback from Poole Hospital's staff. New shower facilities have been provided and it will not be long before the Trust will have to extend its cycle store. Two loan bikes are also available to members of staff to try before committing themselves to this new mode of transport.

The picnic supports the Borough of Poole’s Employee Travel Plan and Hospital’s Travel To Work Scheme which aim to encourage more employees to journey to work in an environmentally friendly way. As well as encouraging cycling, Poole Council and Poole Hospital have introduced a new car sharing scheme where staff can register on line with new software which matches potential car users together.
