22 May 00POPULAR COURSE FOR CARERS EXTENDED
Due to popular demand, Poole Social Services is extending its free carers course for people in Poole who care for a relative or friend at home.Since the courses began in 1999, over 100 people have benefited from attending the course. Carers are people who have someone dependent on them for help with daily living because of an illness or disability. They can be any age, including children or young people.
The courses include sessions on carers rights, claiming benefits, understanding how Social Services work and care techniques including back care for those who need to lift or move others and safety at home.
Mary Masterman, who looks after her husband who has Parkinsons Disease, said: "When I first went to the carers training course I was more than a little apprehensive but we were made to feel very welcome and soon all got to know each other. At the time, life was particularly stressful for me, my husband was not at all well and I was finding things quite difficult. Listening and talking with the other members of the group helped a great deal and I was able to get the information that I needed. I was even able to get a sitter to keep my husband company so that I could attend the course knowing that he was well looked after. By the end of the course I felt much more positive about myself and my situation and I made some new friends who I still keep in contact with".
Val Mitchell, Carers Support Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "The previous courses have proven to be really popular with carers of all ages. The courses provide a valuable opportunity for carers to meet with one another while learning skills, knowledge and confidence that can help caring at home less stressful".
The 8 week course starts on 27th June and will be based near the Civic Centre, Poole from 11.00am - 2.00pm. So that the carer can attend the course, a low cost sitting service is also available. For details of the venue, anyone interested in attending the course or who would like further information on carers can contact Val Mitchell tel. 01202 261174 or Lynne Payton tel. 01202 261170.
