WANTED: SCHOOL GOVERNORS

The Borough of Poole is currently looking for residents who are interested in serving as governors at local schools.

Governors play a vital part in the development of the education service. They work closely with the headteacher and staff in setting the overall aims of the school and helping to deliver a quality service.

Changes in legislation over recent years have added considerably to their responsibilities. They set and monitor the budget, appoint and dismiss staff, agree policies, manage the premises, set targets and monitor the curriculum - amongst many other tasks involved in the running of a school.

The work of governors is entirely voluntary, although expenses are paid in some circumstances. Indeed, governors across the country make up the largest group of volunteers - in total there are over 330,000 of them!

Local education authority governors in Poole are appointed by a panel of councillors. Priority is given to those who have a genuine interest in education and those who have a link with the Council and its work are also very welcome to apply. Particular expertise or experience is not necessary. What is of more importance is common sense and the ability to be a good team member.

David Downing, Advisory Officer for Governor Training and Support, is full of praise for the work of governors. "An effective governing body can have a powerful influence on the development of a school. Governors do need to be able to give time to do the job properly but in return there is an immense amount of satisfaction to be gained from helping young people to develop," he said.

Vacancies are currently being filled at a number of local schools. Further details and application forms can be obtained from David Downing (Tel: 633734 or e-mail: david.downing@poole.gov.uk)
